It remained feudal and agricultural, with the church owning much of the land. #4 The lack of a postwar economic recovery actually is a boon to tourists. It preserved an independent way of life that dates back centuries. Visitors today enjoy a rare sight: a city that has been continuously inhabited and self-sustaining for 2,500 years.
