The Origin of Magic is a series of short stories for children set in a fantasy world where magic is passed down through the female line. Through a three-strand narrative, the lives of three characters, Mother Nature, Lake and Rock, interweave in The Origin of Magic book 1. When Mother Nature chooses Lake through which to pass on a special gift of magic, Lake's pregnancy becomes even more significant. At the same time, Lake's partner Rock becomes anxious about her imminent labour. He is shielded by the men in the tribe from the emotional pain of witnessing the woman he loves in childbirth but it means neither he nor Lake are together when magic is given.
