Winchester brings his storytelling abilities, as well as his understanding of geology, to the San Francisco earthquake. He explores what happened April 18, 1906 just after 5:00 in the morning to level a city symbolic of America's western expansion. He also writes about what has been learned since about the the earthquake's geological underpinnings. Winchester positions the quake's significance along the earth's geological timeline and shows the effect it had on the rest of 20th-century California (as well as American history).
