By the time Jane Flanagan discovers the secluded Victorian house overlooking the ocean, it has long been abandoned. With many mysteries and wonder to be found in the house, it becomes a place for Jane to escape her volatile mother. Twenty years later, she returns home to Maine following a terrible mistake that threatens both her career and marriage and is horrified to find the Victorian is now barely recognizable due to the new owner, Genevieve, transforming it into a glossy white monstrosity straight out of a shelter magazine. Genevieve thinks the home is haunted and hires Jane to research it, and Jane uncovers lovers lost at sea, shattering lost, historical artifacts stolen and sold, and much more.
